Willie E. Burton: A Proven Fighter for Detroit’s Working Families

I’m Willie E. Burton, your elected Police Commissioner for District 5 and the youngest to ever serve in the nation. I’ve stood shoulder to shoulder with working people, demanding accountability, transparency, and real investment in our communities. Now, I’m stepping up to run for Detroit City Council in District 5—and I’m asking for your support.
Public Safety with Accountability
As Police Commissioner, I’ve delivered results:
- I voted to deploy body cameras across all precincts to protect officers and residents from false
- I backed Project Green Light, helping install real-time crime-prevention cameras at over 310 Detroit businesses.
- I supported a raise in officer starting pay from $31,000 to $37,000 and a 4% salary increase for all officers—plus educational reimbursements for those who serve our city.
Fighting for Jobs, Mental Health, and Community Safety
-
- I launched the Fight Crime, Grow Jobs Initiative, helping 700+ small businesses access capital and create apprenticeships and internships for Detroit youth.
- I championed gun safety, securing and distributing 1,000 free gun locks across all 12 precincts.
- I formed the Mental Health Task Force with Wayne State University to confront the mental health crisis in our communities.
But There’s More Work to Do.
Detroit deserves leadership that puts people over profit. That’s why, as a City Council Member, I will:
✅ Fight back against immoral tax giveaways and abatements for billionaires. Our public dollars must serve the public—not line the pockets of the ultra-rich.
✅ Vote for tax and social justice, ensuring those who benefit most from Detroit’s revival pay their fair share.
✅ Push for more affordable housing so every Detroiter has a place to call home.
✅ Defend affordable water rates, because water is a human right—not a luxury.
✅ Demand better public transit so workers and families can get where they need to go without barriers.
✅ Return power to the people by making sure billionaires are held accountable—and our city government works for you.
Public Money for Public Good.
The choice is clear: If you believe in a Detroit that works for everyone, not just the wealthy few—vote for Willie E. Burton for City Council District 5.
Together, we can build a safer, fairer, and stronger Detroit.
